Are You Skilled Enough?

Image

Surgery is a scary thing and the individual in need of operating wants to know that the doctor performing his operation is skilled and experienced in what he or she is doing. When considering a professional career in the trucking industry, the same rule of thumb applies. No trucking company wants to hire a driver who in not skilled or qualified to get behind the wheel. Vehicles that require a Commercial driving license are large and could cause bodily harm, if the driver is not properly trained. Any vehicle regardless of size has the potential to cause injury; however when it comes to driving a vehicle weighing in over 20,000 pounds, a special list of skills are needed in order for safety on the road to occur.

The Skills Tests

Driving is a skill that must be taught and the same is true when it comes to driving large trucks and trailers. In order to insure the highest of safety while on the road, one must pass the following three skills tests:

1.      Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection – this test is to help determine if you the driver are aware of whether or not the vehicle you plan on operating is safe to drive. Your inspector will walk alongside your vehicle with you watching and listening to you perform your inspection; you will need to explain to the inspector what you are expecting and the reason behind it.

2.      Basic Vehicle Control – this test will test the basic driving skills of the individual seeking licensure. He or she will be asked to perform basic driving skills such as moving forward, backwards and turning in a pre-determined area. This area will most likely be outlined with cones, barriers or chalked driving lanes as to give a visual of real obstacles.

3.      On Road Driving – this test allows for real time situations in which one will be examined on how well he or she handles real traffic situations, turns and stops.

Congratulation! With the accomplishment of each test, you are one step closer to attaining your CDL licensure and paving your way to a new career!

PILOT FORCED TO PAY UP IN FUEL REBATE CASE

Image

The total amount Pilot will dole out in its class-action settlement with trucking companies who sued the company over an alleged fuel rebate withholding scheme is $72 million, according to a petition Pilot submitted this week to the Arkansas court that settled the case in July.

Of the total, $55 million is designated as the principle amount owed — what the truck stop chain had allegedly defrauded customers out of — $4.1 million will be paid to class members as part of the 6 percent interest owed on the principle, $3.5 million will go to the cost of the internal auditing and another $14 million is designated for attorneys’ fees, though that amount could be smaller, the court documents say.

Troops2Truckers Helps Vets Become Professional Truck Drivers

Image

During 2013 and 2014, the United States Armed Forces will return nearly 30,000 troops from the Middle East, mostly from Afghanistan, back to the United States. As these men and women return, what we do know is that they return with a “new normal” that will impact where they go, how they live, and what type of jobs they will be more successful at.
The goal of the Veteran Resource Network’s CDL training for veterans is to leverage as many existing resources as necessary in offering services to veterans. The Troops to Truckers program will further this goal but utilizing existing training, Veterans Affairs, veteran organizations, and other connections so that the only new elements created to provide these training opportunities are created to facilitate the breaking down of barriers to opportunity.

Smokey Has a New Ride!

“People don’t see this vehicle going down the road. It’s one of the largest vehicles out on the road but they don’t see it because they’re distracted.”

They alert other troopers, who then pulled those drivers over with their THP cruisers.

“We just try to ride in the center lane, right at the speed limit for trucks, and just let them go by,” said Lt. Boshears, before spotting the second offender.

There is only one THP tractor trailer, so the districts take turns and share. This week marks the first time Knoxville’s District One has used the truck for this type of enforcement campaign.

Sgt. Martin said they hope it will get their message about the dangers of texting driving heard.

“Not only to enforce violations, but also to educate. It’s not as easy as just writing a citation sometimes. People can take their citation and go on, but they have to learn something from that experience.”

THP’s truck campaign continues into Wednesday. They expect to have final enforcement numbers later this week.
